TaSkR IV (February 1-3, 2012)

TaSkR IV was held from 1-3 February, 2012 in Eldoret at the Noble Conference Centre Hotel. Over 100 teaching and aspirant teachers expressed interest and a final 100 were selected.The applicants were drawn from various fields and institutions including medical, research, lecturers, students and religious clerics. 15 facilitators were involved in the training, all are exceptional scholars in their fields. They included Prof. Wenceslaus Kilama, Dr. Ramadhan Noor, Prof. Eric Meslin, Prof. David Ayuku, Ms. Naomi Mutea, Prof. Karina Bhatt, Prof. Thomas Inui, Dr. Rose Ayikukwei, Prof. Jeremy Sugarman, Prof. Ross Upshur, Prof. Bob Wishitemi, Prof. Edwin Were, Dr. Abraham Siika , Dr. Paul Nyongesa, Prof. (Fr) Joseph K. Kiruki.

The workshop employed a variety of teaching methods including; lectures, small group discussions, case studies, group work and Self Directed Learning (SDL), Written and Oral Presentations.

The workshop covered:

  • Weakness in health research ethics in Africa
  • Approaches to teaching international research ethics
  • Other pedagogical approaches in teaching ethics
  • Good clinical practice in research
  • Teachable moment-IREC and IUPUI-IRB research misconduct: cross-cultural perspective, challenges and opportunities-case study
  •  Updated ethics guidance for HIV prevention research
  • Teachable moment: electronic health records
  • Post trial benefits? Various studies
  • Group work-review past and present post trial studies
  • Community engagement in breast cancer biomedical research
