TaSkR II (February 3-5, 2010)

The Second TaSkR Workshop was successfully held from February 3rd - 5th, 2010 in Nakuru, Kenya. This workshop was attended by 25 participants and faculty facilitators from both Moi University and Indiana University. The faculty facilitators were from various disciplines; medicine, reproductive health, public health, behavioral science, religious studies, medical education, anthropology, health services research, sociology, bioethics, and linguistics.

The keynote address was by Prof. Mfuso Bengo from Centre for Bioethics in Eastern and Southern Africa (CEBESA), Division of Community Health, College of Medicine, BLANTYRE, Malawi. His presentation was on Global standard setting of Research Ethics in the context of globalization-Some perspective from Africa.

Other topics included Ethical foundations of International Health Research by Dr. Eric Meslin, E. Meslin; Bio Banks and ethical issues surrounding use of bio banks by Kara Wools; National and international guidelines for the ethical conduct of research by Dr. Simon Lan’gat; Research Ethics and Cultural Context by Dr. Eunice Kamaara; Informed Consent, Theory and practice by Dr. John Sidle; problem based learning by Prof. Simon Kang’ethe; Responsibilities of the researcher and participants in research by Dr. Duncan Ngare; Research on Children and Informed Consent - Ethical Issues by Dr. Rachel Vreeman; and International Collaborative Research; the role of IRB’s and Ethics review Committees by Shelly Bizilla.
